Get started: Playing with mixed media

I think it is really important that we regularly recharge ourselves. We all have our own different ways to charge and manage this… and because you are reading this, I guess one of your ways is to be creative. I know it can be hard to actually start, to pick up a brush and make the first stroke. There are always a hundred reasons why not to start, but there is only one reason TO start – and that is because YOU are worth it!

Well, you’re in the perfect place! Dare to Play is made to help you to start. To find a way to get going and discover how to play with mixed media painting in a relaxed and perfectly imperfect way.

Are you looking for inspiration?

Would you like to get your creative spark going? Would you like to feel inspired, energised and excited to start creating? Would you like to learn to create in a fun and relaxed way? Then this is the class for you! Dare to Play is your step-by-step guide to getting started when you do not have inspiration to start or when you get stuck. I am so excited to share my process of mixed media creating with you. Give yourself time to be creative.

Dare to Play lays out a simple and relaxed process with a number of tricks and paths to get going, to just begin. I will show you how to just START even though you are lacking inspiration and without feeling guilty that you should be doing something else! I focus on how to create just for the sake of creating, how to focus on your journey and your energy rather than the result. Together we find ways to be brave and to do art just for us and our souls… because when you do, I know you will create some magic and you won’t stop! Your energy will shift and you will be a magnet for ideas, insights and inspiration. It might take time but I will help you to not give up, just keep going, and create.

My ultimate goal with this class is that you will find a way to just start, to dare, to begin, be inspired, to play – and I’ll help you on the way if you get stuck!

I hope you will join me!

How you’ll find joy in playing with mixed media

I’ll help you uncover how to

  • start when you have no inspiration or feel you are blocked or empty.

  • work based on feelings rather than purpose. To choose colors, patterns and images based on what feels good.

  • be brave and do some bold moves to make sure you do not get stuck

  • create detail, depth and grunge with layers of collage, paint and gel pens.

  • express yourself in a raw and relaxed way, free from rules and constraints.

    and more…

It’s time to find your flow and focus on the process of making – without getting hung up on the end result. It’s all inside you already. You just need to know how to access it, so you can enjoy the process without the pressure of perfection. This is how you’ll be able to keep creating long after the e-course has finished.

I know from the many hours I’ve put into my own practice, and many thousands of students that this process works. Now it’s your turn to blossom and grow into the creator you were born to be.

The next step? Pick up that pen or brush and start with me by your side helping you learn and explore techniques that feel right for you.

Here's a description of each of the projects

Part 1 - Dare to Start

In this lesson, I will show you how to just get started. I begin by making marks with collage and paint with no goal, no structure and no intention to create anything specific, beautiful or cohesive. I am just finding a way to get over the block or procrastination of me not starting. This process is about doing, about moving, about getting over the fear of starting. When you have those marks on the paper it is sooo much easier to take the next step.

I end the lesson with cutting up the “mess” I made into smaller pieces. This is a moment of magic. I end up with 10 really cool pieces!

Part 2 - Keep going with ease

In this lesson, we will step by step add to the small pieces. With simple prompts, we will add contrasting marks and create variation, depth and details. It is amazing to see the transformation when we let go of the need to create something beautiful but just focus on the feeling and the fun. We will be present, we will feel and just do. That’s it! And when we let go of the requirements to perform, magic can start to happen again!

Part 3 - Be Bold

In the third lesson, I will ‘feel’ and let the image appear in the background. We will focus on a couple of bold moves to push through the block we might encounter when we are scared of ruining, making a mistake or ending up with a result that isn’t ‘pretty’ or perfect. We will, with simple moves, create and not get stuck. I bring in elements of grunge and as soon as I feel I am becoming stuck I do a bold move. To spend time creating is the purpose, not the result.

Love from my past students

“I just watched the class videos for, ‘Bye Bye Perfection’ and have simply fallen in love with what you teach, and how you teach. I cannot wait to start a journal page using your process/techniques. I think you have set me free! Oh.....and in the video, when you tore the edges off the journal pages I swooned! OMG I love that look SO much! Thank you!””

— Peggy

"I wanted to thank you for the beautiful atmosphere at the workshop. I felt such a belonging. I think I've never felt that kind of belonging except at home. Maybe I was at home :) And you have really an encouraging way to teach, I felt you encouraged me to do my kind of art besides giving me new ideas how to use different tools etc. Thank you so much!"

-Barbara

Dare to Play

“Before I took Jenny’s classes, I rarely got excited by what I was creating. Now I’m able to find that flow state where I’m happier, less frustrated and excited by what I’m making.”

– Jennifer P

"Before I took the class, I was nervous and excited. But because of her open and honest way of teaching I felt safe. Jenny is an expert at gathering us to the next step before we’re stopped by our inner critic."

– Kari Mette E

I am Jenny and I am your Creative Guide in this class.

I am a perfectly imperfect, mixed media artist.

Like you, I spent many years pushing aside my creative spark. Then, one day I realised the only way to awaken my inner artist was to just dive in and do it.

This means focusing on the process of making art–the making and doing. Over the years I’ve developed an intuitive, unstructured, tactile and yes, messy (but fun!) process that has allowed me to open up the magic of what is unique within me.

Now, I am a Mixed Media Artist living in Stockholm, Sweden who has sold artwork, exhibited and run workshops all over the world. And I’m on a mission to inspire ordinary people like you to be brave, to use your inner creativity and to do more of what you love. To learn how to be more creative in life, as well as in your art.

I love sharing my magic world with you and can’t wait to see you in my class Dare to Play. I have seen how my creative approach has helped the creativity blossom in me and in thousands of my students. I’m so excited to share it with you to inspire you to expand your skills, and grow your creative confidence too.

Love Jenny

What art supplies do I need?

You’ll get a full list of materials and supplies when you sign up to the course, but you don’t need much to get started.

I believe in reusing and recycling materials. I’m sure you already have a lot of it at home. Some of the most common things I use are:

  • A couple of pieces of thick paper to paint on
  • A couple of pieces of corrugated cardboard
  • Pieces of scrap paper from old books
  • Acrylic paints, inks and matt mediums
  • Different brushes, sponges, a pallet knife or an old credit card will do
